Davies Family Bakery is a true story of dedication, hard work and family values, built on more than four decades of commitment to the craft of baking.

Andrew Davies began his journey at just 15 years old as a Saturday boy at Ashdown’s Bakery. His early days were spent greasing tins, serving customers and cleaning floors. A year later, he was offered an apprenticeship, turning what started as a weekend job into a lifelong profession that has now spanned 45 years.

During his apprenticeship, Andrew attended college in Chatham one day a week and went on to win Apprentice of the Year. By the age of 19, he had become Head Baker. Years later, after marrying his wife Tracy and starting a family, Andrew became Manager. In 1999 Tracy joined the bakery, and in September 2002, following George Ashdown’s retirement, Andrew and Tracy purchased the business and proudly renamed it Davies Family Bakery.

Over the years, it has truly become a family operation. Their son Lee has worked in the bakery making cakes, their daughter Amy was a Saturday girl, and Andrew’s mum worked in the shop. Together, they have built a business rooted in loyalty, tradition and community spirit.

Andrew begins his working day at 6pm, baking through the night alongside his baker Clive and a night packer. The bakery supplies its own shop as well as wholesale orders to local restaurants, farm shops, cafes and burger vans. Tracy opens the shop each morning at 5.30am, serving early workers on their way to start the day.

Located along a busy road between residential houses, the bakery is known for its fresh bread, rolls, filled sandwiches, savouries and cakes, all made daily and offered at fair prices. Customers return not only for quality products but also for the warm welcome and friendly chat that has become part of the Davies Family Bakery experience.

As Andrew reflects, baking is a hard and physical profession, but one that rewards dedication and passion. In an era where many traditional bakeries have disappeared, Davies Family Bakery stands as a reminder of the independent, community-focused businesses that continue to serve with pride.
