Foodforecast Technologies Launches in the UK, Bringing AI-Powered Demand Forecasting to Bakeries and the Ultra-Fresh Food Sector

German foodtech company, backed by €8M Series A funding, targets the UK’s ultra-fresh food sector with technology proven to cut waste by up to 34% and boost sales by up to 11%

German foodtech company Foodforecast Technologies today announces its UK market launch. According to WRAP, bakeries in the UK generate 75,000 tonnes of entirely preventable food waste every year. Foodforecast Technologies is here to change that, bringing its AI and machine learning-driven forecasting platform to bakery operators of all sizes, food service operators, supermarkets, and forecourt food retailers.

The UK launch is available nationwide from day one, with an initial focus on the bakery sector, one of the most acute food waste challenges in food retail. Products like fresh bread, pastries, and sandwiches have shelf lives measured in hours, not days, requiring accurate forecasting that standard planning tools simply cannot handle.

Built in Bakery, Proven Across Europe

Foodforecast was built from the ground up for bakery, and critically, it was built with bakery businesses. The company worked directly alongside multiple bakery operators from the earliest stages of development, testing and refining the technology in live bakery environments. It was this hands-on collaboration that shaped everything, from how the platform thinks about intra-day demand to how it fits into the daily rhythms of a real bakery operation. That deep roots-up bakery expertise is the foundation everything else is built on.

The platform generates highly accurate daily predictions by combining each operator’s previous sales data with external factors such as weather, local events, seasonality, and more, delivering forecasts that reflect the real world, not just historical averages. Foodforecast integrates directly with existing POS and ERP systems, meaning operators are up and running with no disruption to their current setup.

Development began in 2019 and the platform was commercially launched in 2022. Foodforecast is now deployed across more than 5000 stores across Europe, working with small & large bakeries, sushi companies & leading operators including SSP Germany. Customers achieve a food waste reduction of up to 34%, a sales uplift of up to 11%, and more than 90% automation of previously manual ordering and production planning processes.

To date, the platform has saved more than 8,800 tonnes of food from going to waste across Europe, a figure that will grow significantly as Foodforecast scales into new markets including the UK.

“Every operator defines success differently, whether that’s minimising waste, maximising availability, or freeing their teams from manual planning. Our technology adapts to what matters most to each business and delivers it automatically.”

— Justus Lauten, Founder & CEO, Foodforecast

From Bakeries to Forecourts

While bakery remains Foodforecast’s heartland, the technology is designed to serve any operator handling ultra-fresh products. This includes quick service restaurants, grocery retail, supermarket prepared food counters, and food-to-go operations at petrol station forecourts.

The platform integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, ensuring teams can reduce waste without adding operational complexity. Highly automated ordering and production recommendations are generated by the AI, freeing staff from manual planning while improving accuracy.

Backed by Impact Investors, Scaling Internationally

The UK expansion is funded by Foodforecast’s €8 million Series A round, led by SHIFT Invest (Netherlands) and the European VC ECBF, with repeated participation from Future Food Fund and Aeronaut Invest. The round benefits from support under the EU’s InvestEU Fund.

A UK Market Ready for Change

“75,000 tonnes of preventable bakery food waste every year in the UK, costing the industry £1.1 billion. That should shock everyone in this industry. Foodforecast exists to change it.”

— Greg Nixon, UK Lead, Foodforecast

The Business Case for Reducing Food Waste

According to WRAP, 75,000 tonnes of bakery food waste is entirely preventable in the UK every year, at a cost of £1.1 billion to the industry. This is one of the most significant and solvable problems in British food retail, the direct result of planning tools that were never designed for the pace and complexity of ultra-fresh production.

Across Europe, approximately 30,000 tonnes of fresh food are wasted every day due to inaccurate demand planning. In the UK, food waste carries significant financial and reputational costs, while contributing to unnecessary carbon emissions throughout the supply chain.

With ingredient costs, energy bills and wages all rising, UK food operators are under more margin pressure than ever. Reducing waste is no longer just an environmental priority, it is a financial imperative. Foodforecast gives operators a direct lever to protect their margins.

Food waste gets the headlines, but it's downstream of a deeper issue. The industry simply doesn't have enough qualified staff to manage demand, inventory, and production properly.

To support its UK expansion, foodforecast has appointed a dedicated UK team headed by UK Lead Greg Nixon. The company believes every new market should be run by people who genuinely understand it, the language, the regions, and the way the industry works locally. A solution built in Germany cannot simply be exported; it has to be shaped around the realities of each new country. For UK bakeries, that means hands-on, in-market support from a team that speaks their language and understands their business from the inside.
