Marshalls Bakery Ltd is a business steeped in history, with roots dating back to the late 1800s. Founded in Pewsey, Wiltshire by Charles Marshall, the bakery has continued to operate from the very same site for generations. While the story of how Charles came to be in Pewsey remains something of a mystery, what is certain is that his decision to start a bakery created a legacy that still thrives today.
Now led by Managing Director Richard Marshall, the business remains firmly in family hands. Richard trained at Salisbury Bakery College before joining his father, John, in the bakery. He took over the business in the late 1990s and has continued to build on the strong foundations laid before him. Both Richard and his father have also played an active role in the wider baking community, serving as Presidents of the Western Region Bakers Association and building lasting connections through the industry.
Located in the heart of the Vale of Pewsey, the bakery is an important part of village life. Marshalls Bakery is deeply committed to supporting its local community, regularly contributing to local events, charities and initiatives, including the much-loved Pewsey Carnival.
This sense of community was especially evident during the challenges of covid. The team helped to set up distribution hubs for surrounding rural villages and introduced door-to-door deliveries, ensuring that people in more remote areas still had access to fresh food and a friendly face. These efforts also meant that many members of the team were able to continue working during this time.
Today, Marshalls Bakery operates two shops, the original in Pewsey and a second in Royal Wootton Bassett. Alongside this, their retail vans serve business parks and more remote locations with a range of takeaway products, while their wholesale vans supply customers across the wider area.
Although still based in the original bakery, the business has continued to invest in its facilities to meet the demands of modern baking. Upgrades including new ovens, freezer rooms and walk-in retarder provers have allowed the team to maintain quality while increasing efficiency.
Marshalls Bakery Ltd is a strong example of a business that has successfully balanced heritage with progress. With deep community ties, a commitment to quality and a clear sense of purpose, they continue to build on a legacy that has stood the test of time.
We are delighted to recognise Marshalls Bakery Ltd as our April Member of the Month.
