Apprenticeship Guidelines

Taking on an apprentice might seem like a big commitment which requires you to invest time, effort and money from your business. But, by taking on an apprentice you might see a positive impact by developing new talent, it could even help your business thrive.

The CBA’s guide on how to take on an apprentice will help you establish what you need to know before taking on the apprentice, the reasons why you should take on an apprentice, and how you can successfully implement them into your business.

Apprenticeship Training

If your business currently pays the Government’s Apprentice Levy (ie - you have an annual pay bill of £3 million or more) then National Food and Drink Training (NFDT) can support you with your apprenticeship programme. The Craft Bakers Association has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with NFDT, the specialist training arm of Scottish Bakers, our partner trade association for Scotland.

NFDT’s objective is to sustainably raise the attractiveness, profitability and productivity of the food and drink industry through the skills and development of its existing and future workforce. NFDT is now actively seeking to support new apprentices from businesses throughout England currently paying the Government’s Apprenticeship Levy.

NFDT employs a team of industry-specialised Training Advisors who support training delivery across the UK and Northern Ireland. This means bespoke, effective, work-based learning in the workplace at a time that suits your business and your employees; whether its day shift, night shift, back shift or across split shifts.

NFDT has considerable experience and a reputation for excellence in the delivery of work-based learning and development and has a range of support materials designed to aid underpinning knowledge, with additional online support through the James Allan Bakery Academy portal which helps bring the learning to life.
