Iconic gingerbread houses
CARR’S Flour Mills has been announced as the major sponsor of The Gingerbread House Festival.
Organised by Grasmere Gingerbread® and hosted at the Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa overlooking Lake Windermere across the weekend of November 20–22, the event will raise money for Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.
Allan Burns, Sales & Marketing Director of Carr’s Flour Mills, is “delighted” to support the event that celebrates a centuries-old baking tradition.
“There's something that really resonates about a festival where people spend hours building houses out of gingerbread, all in support of Shelter and its work with people who don't have a home of their own,” he said.
“For our business – which has spent nearly two centuries helping people create warm, happy moments in their own kitchens – backing a cause that helps make sure everyone has a kitchen to bake in feels like exactly the right thing to be part of.
Early entries include ‘gingerbread house’ designs with a twist – including a dragon boat, Roman Colosseum and a ‘Baba Yaga’ witch’s hut on chicken legs.
Joanne Hunter, Co-Director of Grasmere Gingerbread®, said as the nights draw in people’s thoughts inevitably turns to cosy baking activities.
“I’m delighted that Carr’s Flour Mills – one of Cumbria’s oldest food brands – has chosen to support The Gingerbread House Festival,” she said.
“Together, we celebrate 362 years producing artisan products which have stood the test of time.
Endorsed by Cumbria Tourism, The Gingerbread House Festival is offering £10,000 worth of prizes including £1000 cash awards to primary and secondary schools.
The overall winner will take home the Gingerbread House of the Year 2026 trophy and £250.
